Mark Zuckerberg has started a book club and says he will read a book every other week. He said “My challenge for 2015 is to read a new book every other week — with an emphasis on learning about different cultures, beliefs, histories and technologies.”
It’s quite interesting that someone of his magnitude still wants to learn. We all learn something new each and every day but take it for granted. If we look at our lives and the mistakes, trials and tribulations we endure, we could look at what we have learnt from them rather than the events themselves.
During December all I heard and read about was; what are your new years resolutions? How motivated are you going to be in 2015? The year of 2015 is the year of manifestation.
What is “manifestation”? The dictionary states “a sign of something existing or happening…….appearance”. In the Thesaurus it’s equivalent is “demonstration, meaning, disclosure, expression, phenomenon, revelation.”
Now I like that word, “revelation”! I prefer that to manifestation. It’s quite a strong word and is more motivating. Other words for revelation include “epiphany, discovery, vision, communication, oracle, proclamation, prophecy”, much more impacting.
But we all have these inspirational moments in December. The gym memberships go through the roof because people think they over did it during the festive season, only to lose interest within the first month or get injured in their first attempt due to thinking they are still as fit as they were when they were 18. Failed.
We start the year with great intentions, all spirited and full of motivation. Then complain and forget it all the moment we step back in to work on that first day back. Failed.
There is the new craze of not drinking for the whole of January mainly to raise money for charity. This is a great idea to raise funds for much needed causes, but what happens the other eleven months of the year? Do we end up binge drinking in order to catch up on what we missed out in January? Someone I knew did this challenge. I asked her how it was going, “Great” she said, “I’ve only been drinking shandy!” Failed.
I ran a workshop on setting goals to a small group back in October 2014. I met them again in December and asked each one how they had got on and where they were at with completing their goals. Not one had made much effort in the pursuit of what they wanted. Some hadn’t even started! If you want something so bad, how come you won’t put the effort in to getting it? Failed.
So we put these “resolutions” in our minds and clearly think they will manifest themselves to come true, and we all seem happy waiting for that moment to arrive yet complaining to everyone who will listen at how nothing has been done. If you want something so bad it is down to you to get it. It won’t come in Santa’s sack as a Christmas present; it won’t magically appear on your doorstep with a note saying “This is for you, x”, or be delivered by the postman!
Will you learn something about this post and take action accordingly? Probably not, but you could surprise yourself and do something different this time. Like Mr. Zuckerberg, read a book. Learn something new. Show everyone you are not one of those who are sitting on the proverbial fence, waiting for their “resolution” to arrive.
What prophecy will you hold in the future? What is your vision for the end of 2015? What will you discover about yourself in the coming weeks? Will you have one of those sudden “epiphany” moments and realise where you are right now in your life?
